This time last year the Cowboys joined the free agent market acquiring LBKeith Brookings and Safety Sensabaugh. 2010 Free Agency has been the big goose egg. They haven't even re-signed anyone on the existing roster.
I am not sure if Jones is being the patient Zen master or what. There really have been several players that could have helped the team including Julius Peppers but he would have cost alot of money. I am starting to wonder if Jones is going to change direction and go heavy in the draft.
The 2009 NFL draft was a strange one for the Cowboys who did not pick until the third round. I wonder if he doesn't load up with picks and move up in the draft to get a impact player in the first or second round.
Time will tell but someone needs to call Jones and wake him up just in case he is sleeping at the wheel.
It looks like the Cowboys are off to a slow start in the free agency market. The only two players I am surprised they have not signed a Sensabaugh and Spears. The rest could be used for upgrades.
The Cowboys only have one free agent this year that they have to worry about losing. So where will the Cowboys go searching. It's always hard to say. Rumors are everywhere and most do not pan out.
It will be interesting to see who gets picked up from the Cowboys.
Cowboys do not want to get kicked in the Tenders:
If a team wants to make a run at Miles Austinin restricted free agency, they now know they would have to part with their first- and third-round picks for the Pro Bowlwide receiver.
The tender is worth $3.168 million.
Stephen Bowen, Sam Hurdand Cory Procterwill receive the second-round tender for the second straight year.
Hurd and Procter will make $1.759 million if they make the team. The Cowboys would receive a second rounder in return if they chose not to match a deal.
Others:
Jason Hatcher - second-round tender, $1.759 million Pat McQuistan - original draft pick, $1.176 million * - Gerald Sensabaugh - second-round tender, $1.809 Junior Siavii - original draft pick, $1.101 million ** - Marcus Spears - original draft pick, $1.226 million Shaun Suisham - not tendered (No Surprise) Pat Watkins - orginal draft pick, $1.176 million Duke Preston - original draft pick, $1.226 million
* - Sensabaugh's second round tender should be worth $1.815 million.
** - If a team signs Spears, then the Cowboys could receive only a second-round pick in return despite the fact that Spears was a first rounder in 2005.
I thought Sensabaugh and Spears would have received the first-round tenders worth $2.621 million. Not surprisingly Shaun Suisham was not tendered, making him a free agent.
The Cowboys have signed veteran Kick Returner and Corner Back Allen Rossum. He was cut by the 49ers and picked up by the Cowboys during the bye week.
The Cowboys return game has not been the greatest including a fumble that almost cost the game in Kansas City and another return fumble against the Giants that lead to a loss.
Looks like the Cowboys want a veteran guy who knows how to make some yardage and hold on to the football. He can also play CB which won't hurt.

The 12-year veteran has been a game-breaking returner with five teams — the Eagles, Packers, Falcons, Steelers and 49ers — since being drafted in the third round out of Notre Dame in 1998.
He is already considered one of the NFL’s all-time best returners. Rossum ranks second in NFL history for total career return yards (14,987) and kickoff-return yards (11,931) and first among active players (ninth all-time) with 3,056 career punt-return yards. He is the only player in NFL history to have a kickoff return for a touchdown with five teams.
He will be reunited in Dallas with special teams coach Joe DeCamillis, with whom Rossum spent five years working in Atlanta. His familiarity with DeCamillis’ schemes should make for an easy transition.
DeCamillis said the addition of Rossum is not an indictment of Cowboys wide receiver/punt returner Patrick Crayton or a way to limit health concerns with running back Felix Jones and wide receiver Miles Austin by keeping them off kickoff returns. YEAH RIGHT!!!
The stats say Rossum averaged only 21.7 yards on kickoff returns in three games this season. But he returned kicks for touchdowns in 2007 and 2008. As far as punts go, Rossum has averaged less than 9 yards per return in five of the past six years and was averaging just 7 yards a return in three games this season with the 49ers. His last touchdown on a punt return was in 2004.
But Rossum says he isn’t worried. Earlier this year, he took a punt 80 yards for a touchdown against the Seahawks that was called back because of a penalty behind the play. He said he plans to make the most his opportunity.
The Cowboys have yet re-sign All-Pro Linebacker DeMarcus Ware to a new contract. It's June and there is no more time to waste. It appears that the Cowboys are waiting on the salary cap relief that will Greg Ellis' departure will bring but there is less then two months before training campand mandatory OTAs are days away.
The Cowboys need to get this done sooner rather then later. You do not want your Super Star unhappy going into the season.
The Dallas Cowboys signed free-agent tight end Scott Chandler, wide receiver Mike Jefferson and defensive end Derreck Robinson on Thursday.
These guys look like filler guys. I'm not sure where there going with these guys. Maybe practice squad.
Chandler was a fourth-round pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2007 and was inactive for all but one game that year before spending the 2008 season on injured reserve.
Jefferson was on the Cowboys' practice squad last year before his release in October.
Robinson spent two seasons with the Chargers and one with the Miami Dolphins, but he hasn't played in a game since 2007.
The Cowboys have two more weeks of organized off-season workouts and a mandatory mini-camp in mid-June before training camp starts July 29 in San Antonio.
Ellis and owner and general manager Jerry Jones met Tuesday morning. While a definitive time frame has not been set, Jones said Ellis would play elsewhere in 2009.
DeMarcus Ware 3-time pro bowler who had 20 sacks last year is still not signed by the Cowboys!
We all know that it is about the money.
Well Jerry Jones needs to show BeWare DWare the money.
DEFENSE WINS SUPER BOWLS...
and DeMarcus is a Super Bowl caliber leader.
Coming up with the proper price tag, however, could take time. Washington signed defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to a seven-year, $100 million deal that includes $41 million in guaranteed money. Earlier this month, Pittsburgh signed linebacker James Harrison, who beat Ware for the NFL's defensive player of the year award, to a six-year, $51.75 million deal with $20 million guaranteed.
I figure he will get 5 or 6 years; $60 or $70 million with $25 million guaranteed. Hard to say what Jones will come up with.
Not Drafting until the 3rd round should free up some money.
The Cowboys have agreed to terms with eight undrafted rookies. The team will hold a three-day rookie minicamp from Friday to Sunday to check out their new players.
Rudy Carpenter
Arizona State quarterback, who started 43 consecutive games in his college career. His stock was higher going into the 2008 season, but his final year at ASU yielded 2,493 passing yards and a career-low 16 TD passes during a 5-7 campaign. At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, he is about the same size as the Cowboys’ fourth-round draft pick, quarterback Stephen McGee of Texas A&M.Carpenter passed for 81 touchdowns and 10,491 yards in his career, both second on ASU’s all-time list.
One of the top passers in Pac-10 Conference history...started an FBS-best 43 consecutive games dating back to the 2005 season...totaled 10,491 passing yards, while completing 799-of-1,309 passes (61.0 pct.) with 81 touchdowns...the 799 completions are the most in school history, while he ranks second behind Andrew Walter in passing yards, pass attempts and touchdowns passes... his 61.0 completion percentage in his career is the best in ASU history...he is also tied for second in school history with 26 wins as a starting quarterback, behind only Danny White with 30...ranks in the top 10 all-time among Pac-10 quarterbacks in career passing yards, career touchdown passes and career yards of total offense...earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors for his sophomore, junior and senior seasons, and he received freshman All-America recognition in 2005...led the nation in three passing categories as a redshirt freshman in 2005 (passer efficiency rating, interception percentage and yards per passing attempt), while establishing a Pac-10 Conference record pass efficiency rating of 175.01, also the first time a freshman led the nation in the statistic...was the most accurate freshman passer in Division I-A history, completing an NCAA freshman record 68.4 percent of his passes.
HE SOUNDS LIKE A WINNER TO ME.
Michael Turkovich
Notre Dame offensive tackle, a 6-foot-5, 305-pounder, started his last two years in South Bend.
Greg Isdaner
West Virginia guard (6-foot-3, 325 pounds) was a freshman All-American. Although he started 38 games in his college career, he’s battled injuries and required shoulder surgery last year.
Travis Bright
Brigham Young offensive lineman (6-foot-5, 316 pounds) served as a team captain last season. His status dropped when he suffered a broken leg at the end of the 2007 season.
Kevin Ogletree
Virginia receiver missed his sophomore season with a knee injury, but returned in 2008. He caught 58 passes for 753 yards as a senior; he played for the Cavaliers when current Cowboys assistant John Garrett coached there.
Julian Hawkins
Boise State receiver is a converted tight end.

Jamar Hunt
UTEP tight end should compete to be the team’s third tight end.
Coleman and Hannah will probably be back on the practice team but the signing of Austin is no minor signing. He had a good year on 2008, good enough to have the Jets take a serious look at stealing him. They just didn't want to give up a 2nd round draft pick for him. Austin knows the Cowboys system and should be an even bigger contributor this year.
He can also return kicks which is good because the Cowboys Special Teams have not been good.
Steeler's LB Harrison gets locked and loaded with a six year deal! You may ask why this is Cowboys' news? DeMarcus Ware is still to be re-signed by the Cowboys. Harrison beat out Ware for Defensive Player of the Year and you can bet that if the Cowboys were not 9-7 and their defense ranked much lower then the 1st ranked Steelers Ware would have won the title. That said Ware should now get about the same level of deal from the Cowboys.
Let's see how much Jerry Jones wants to win a Super Bowl.
It has been no surprise that Thomas would not be back in Dallas. He said so right after the season finale versus the Eagles.
At 36 years old there was not must interest in Thomas but the Chiefs are looking to rebuild and he can help.
The NFC East plays the AFC West this year so the Cowboys may get to see Thomas in his new uniform. We will find out Tuesday when the 2009 schedule is announced.
The NJ Star Ledger has reported that the Jets intend to offer Miles Austin a free agent deal. The Jets would then owe the Cowboys their 2nd round pick.
Wait and see time.
Maybe the Cowboys can take the 2nd round pick plus a couple other picks and move up in the draft to get a stud WR. I'm sure Jerry Jones is looking into it.
Cowboys Hall of Fame QB Troy Aikman; now top football broadcaster is talking Cowboys again!
Troy Aikman thinks the Cowboys made the right move by getting rid of Terrell Owens. Now he's curious to see whether they also were right about making Roy Williams the new top target for Tony Romo.
Dallas gave its first-, third- and sixth-round picks in the upcoming draft to Detroit to get Williams midway through last season. He hardly looked a guy who led the NFC in yards receiving two years earlier, producing fewer than 200 yards and a single touchdown in 10 games, yet without Owens he becomes the No. 1 receiver.
"If Roy Williams doesn't turn out to be the player that they thought he would be when they made the trade, I think this would be one of the biggest busts in the history of the league," Aikman said.
Aikman is a good evaluator of talent. The Cowboys have latched their Super Bowl hopes on Williams it is put up or shut up time for him.
Tank Johnson told anyone who would listen that he couldn't wait to leave the Cowboys. On Tuesday, he finally found a new home in Cincinnati with a one-year deal.
Johnson joined the Cowboys in 2007 after serving an eight-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy during his time in Chicago. He had 45 tackles and a sack last season as Jay Ratliff's backup at nose tackle.
