Strong safety Roy Williams has had so much speculation surrounding him this off season. Can he return to the form in which he played a few years ago when he was one of the best in the game? Has he turned people off with his comments about playing in Wade Phillips defensive scheme? He struggled in coverage last season and one has to question whether it is the scheme or if Williams has lost a step.
At 27 he is still young. But the NFL is a brutal game and the loss of a split second in speed or reaction time can be the difference between a Pro Bowler and a retired player. Roy had 115 tackles but didn't have a sack or a stop behind the line of scrimmage.
The controversy continued when he missed an OTA for a family vacation then had a private meeting with the teams defensive coaches about his role on the team.
Put all of these things aside though and a good season from Williams could make Dallas the best secondary in the league. The
Cowboys have improved the cornerback position with rookies Mike Jenkins and
Orlando Scandrick and possibly Pacman Jones. They also expect Pro Bowl free safety Ken
Hamlin to return.
The Cowboys need the stir around Williams to stop and Roy to step up, prove his critics wrong, and have the best season of his career. I think his best years could still be ahead of him. Does he believe that? Maybe changing his number back to his college number of 38 will help. If not, it could spell trouble for the Boys.
